Aliens are the new vampires.
For those of you who haven't participated in an I♥M Read Along before, what we do is split the book up into 65 pages per day over the course of a week. Every day we get together and discuss what we've read by answering discussion questions and hanging out listening to what other people have to say and then responding to it. It's pretty fun. Hmm, I'm not sure if aliens are the new vampires. Seeing as how sci fi is gaining more of a momentum in YA right now (check out Beth Revis' Across The Universe), I'm betting yes. And I prefer vampires over aliens really. With vampires you know what you get: a pounce and a bite. But aliens? Unpredictable! Plus the probing...
I think aliens COULD be the new vampires, if sci-fi continues to gain momentum in YA. But right now, I'm still seeing a LOT of angels and fairies.
I would like aliens to be the new vampires, though. :D Especially because I love sci-fi and all this paranormal is making me a bit magic-sick.
Aliens are waaaay cooler than vampires. I think vampires are vile and disgusting, so a bag of dirt would be more interesting. But aliens are cool because there are so many possibilities, so many species. The ideas, the probabilities and therefore the mystery/fear/suspense is limitless. :)

There's no way aliens are the new vampires. I think the vampire world is still in power. Vampires are still common cliches in today's movies, books and even comics. This Twilight phenomen doesn't seem to be dying any point in the given future. Which is espeically discouraging in young adults book sections. Vampires, vampires, vampires. But I personally like aliens, they're a bit underrated and they're big area to explore, since you can describe them any way you want! :D

What a cool giveaway and cool idea about the read along. everyone keeps calling all different things - aliens, zombies, etc - the new vampires and I just can't help but wonder why there isn't room for all of it. I do love vampires (I was bitten at a young age by the LJ Smith books), but I also think there is so much more to the supernatural/paranormal world in writing. I pretty much love of all of them. Unless there was ever a bug creature. that I wouldn't love.

Based on my Amazon new release rss feed, it looks like publishers are doing their best to make aliens the new vamps, but with the popularity of shows like True Blood, The Gates, and the continuing popularity and sales of vamp books in both adult and YA lit, seems the market hasn't been over-saturated just yet. I'm for either, as long as strong characters, solid plots, and the like keep coming. Though I'm ready for some alien goodness... It'll help fill the massive void that the advent of the end of the Hunger Games series is now causing me :)
I think that aliens could very well be the new vampires but I also think that it will be a while before a lot of people are convinced! Vampires are so popular right now but maybe I Am Number Four will persuade them otherwise.

I prefer aliens, because there hasn't been a lot done with them yet, but there's a long way to go before aliens are the new vampire. Vampires have been objects of lust and seduction for over a century but aliens... They've got a way to go before they're mainstream enough to be heartthrobs outside of the Trekkie/Star Wars circles. (Though Cardassians... totally could be hot.)
I don't think aliens are the new vampires, but I do enjoy them. I still remember watching the X-Files with my parents! Vampires are my favorite though! Buffy and Angel sealed the deal for me many years ago!

I definitely hope aliens are the new vampires, because I prefer them. Vampires tend to be really overdone, and there is so much more possibility with aliens. They can be customized and entire planets can be created, whereas vampires are more limited. This is a really good contest!!

Aliens aren't the new vampires- they don't have nearly as much suck! Although they do both inhabit worlds of darkness and have strange, undefined powers. I think aliens are quite interesting, though, depending on what form they take and what they do. Vampires have been done to death, at this point, too, and I'd hat the aliens to go down the same blood-soaked path.

I suppose that to readers who don't read SciFi, aliens may turn out to be the new vampires, if what you mean is that they will turn out to be the next big thing.
But for me, I have been a SciFi reader for a long time and they are two seperate types of reading.
Hope that authors don't change the alien genre into just another bloodfest.

I think aliens could be the new vampires but maybe in a year or two. Right now, YA books seem to be focussed on vampires and angels- with demons and werewolves bringing up the rear.
I haven't really read any YA books that focus on aliens so I think it would be very, very interesting! There is so much the author could explore. I'm thoroughly intrigued.

I think aliens were popular before the vampire craze that is currently going on. I think the vampires pushed the aliens to the side for a few years but I think aliens might be making a come back. The nice thing about the 'alien genre' is, that it isn't overdone and there are more than one ways to build a story around them. So yes - aliens are the new vampires. I read the first few chapters of 'i am number four' at the harper website, and I am so excited to see what is going to happen to number four, henri, an co. throughout the story! I can't wait to read the rest of the book!!

I think that it is possible for aliens to become the new phenomenon, it hard to choose which i like more...vampires have the mysterious-dark-sexy side, and aliens have the mysterious-lost/trying to find their way home-hotness...but i think vampires might have that little something more that i prefer... don't get me wrong aliens have a pretty good chance of taking over the vampire scene... especially if they look like tom welling from smallville :P

I don't think that aliens really are the "new vampires". I think it depends on the supply and demand of the market. I put a lot of store on the story telling quality of the author. So no matter how "alien" it is, if the story telling quality is dragging, it won't cut it. It also depends on the consumers. I think the consumers now are inundated with vampire stories and just want something different. Angel, alien, does not matter, so long as it is different but feeds their wants. It won't feed their wants if the story telling quality puts them to sleep.

Well... I think Aliens could definitely be the new thing if authors work their magic in the right way, they just have to be convincing enough for readers to fall in love with the character. Vampires were awesome, not because they were vampires, but because of how dark and uknown and tragic and courageous authors showed us they could be. I think that Aliens should be the new vampires, but right now everyone really seems hooked on that urban legends vibe with werewolves, fae, and all those other guys. Too bad really, aliens would be totally exciting because with them you don't have any rules to follow. Aliens can be anything you want them to be!

I have to admit, from the books that I've read, and from what I hear at school aliens aren't the new vampires. But from my point of view I believe they should be. Personally I adore aliens simply because they are mysterious and you never truely what they are like. Meanwhile vampires have a blurred image of what they are meant to be like. Sure they both are like that but I feel you have more freedom to imagine what vampires are like meanwhile it's not all that posible with vampires.

When people think of vampires (usually either a YA paranormal fan or during Halloween), they focus on either of two images. The first, is the traditional vampire, from long ago, where it (usually a male) is an evil minded creature that seeks to drink the blood of young females. He may have one or two love slaves, but his goal is usually the death of the human. This image may be expanded to include vampires that eat people and have a crazed bloodthirsty nature.
The second image (that which we at quirky fate press prefer) is that of the sexy vampire/vampiress, who may or may not become tangled in a difficult love affair. They drink blood only out of neccessity, and are truly good at heart. Or, they are allow to be reformed bad boys :) We also don't mind if they have powers of mind control and shapeshifting.
When most people think of aliens, there are various images that arise. They range from gross and slimy to etheral beings. Sometimes they may be out to protect our world, but usually they are here to invade.
Regardless of what they look like, two common themes emerge with aliens. 1. That they are beings of higher intelligience (how else could they find us?) and 2. They present some sort of threat.
In this way, I don't think aliens could ever be the new vampire. It would be difficult for people to wrap their minds around an alien looking enough like a human for one to find them sexy and mysterious. Usually even when they are running from a danger on their planet, because of their high intelligence and powers, they still appear as threat to our survival.
With vampires, there are ways to kill them if they are the evil kind, and if they are the sexy, omg i wish i was a vampire/had a vampire bf...well then, we don't mind their presence at all :) :-P
In this way, I don't think that aliens could ever replace vampires.
I don't think aliens are the new vampires. I think, in general, is way easier to us to relate to a human form (even if it's a "dead" one) than to an alien form of life... "Humanize" an alien is not easy, and not every author can do it in a way that's enjoyable to read, so I think aliens won't be so popular as vampires are/were (but I'm only guessing, you never know...).
Right now, I would say I prefer aliens. It would be a life-changing experience to know somethings from another planet (well, knowing a dead-walking-blood-sucker would probably be too, but I think would be more scary and life-ending...)! Scientific and culturally amazing! I totally can imagine being involved with a book about them (but that's can be because I need a break from vampires, immediately)
